A LONDON council was set to overwhelmingly approve a motion to divest from companies complicit in Israel’s genocide and occupation of Palestine.
Tower Hamlets council is expected to pass the move at a meeting this evening as the Morning Star went to press.
The motion would hold the borough to avoid procuring contracts and investing in pension funds in companies operating in illegally occupied territory and arms firms supplying the Israeli army.
Brought by Green councillor Jonathan Purcell, it builds on a January 2025 proposal limited to arms companies.
If passed, Tower Hamlets would instruct the London Central Investment Vehicle (CIV) to divest from investments funds complicit in Israeli genocide and occupation, and included accountability measures to ensure implementation.
The motion was supported by local branches of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Unison, CND and Stop the War Coalition.
Mr Purcell said Tower Hamlets is “a beacon of pro-Palestinian solidarity,” adding it is crucial other councils also put “pressure on London CIV.”
