Labour must go further on sectoral bargaining and union recognition rights, STUC demands

THE Scottish TUC will call on Britain’s Labour government today to “up the ante” on the Employment Rights Bill, arguing it should go further to establish sectoral collective bargaining and union recognition rights.

The union federation said it welcomed measures to deliver day-one rights to statutory sick pay and protection from unfair dismissal, as well as rules aimed at tackling precarious work and fire-and-rehire practices, but warned employers were trying to water down even these reforms.

STUC general secretary Roz Foyer said: “A Labour UK government should represent the interests of working people, not the corporates nor the elites.

“Their Employment Rights Bill, if delivered in full, will be the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights for a generation. But the Bill by itself is not enough. They must go further to include rights on sectoral bargaining and for union access to workplaces right across our economy.”
