Mayer eases past Ryan to retain WBO welterweight title

MIKAELA MAYER retained her WBO world welterweight title at the weekend as she beat England’s Sandy Ryan by unanimous decision.

The American overcame a cut above the eye and Ryan’s rally in the later rounds, winning with judge’s scores of 97-93, 97-93 and 98-92.

Saturday’s Las Vegas meeting was a rematch after Mayer took the crown from Ryan in New York in September 2024.

Mayer landed a number of hard shots in the early round and although her challenger fought her way back, the champion was too far ahead on the judge’s cards.

Having beaten Ryan twice, 34-year-old Mayer is looking ahead to a title unification bout with Wales’s Lauren Price.

Price added the WBC and IBF titles to the WBA crown she already held with a points victory over Natasha Jonas on March 7.
