MASS disruption to power stations and urban centres are expected to take place across the country today as hundreds of environmentalists protest against the fossil fuel industry.
The day of direct action is hosted by Reclaim the Power (RTP), which is holding its annual training camp in a field near the infamous Didcot power station in Oxfordshire.
Road blocks, occupations and marches are set to take place in some of Britain’s largest cities, including London.
Speaking to the Star yesterday, RTP’s Hannah Martin said that for security reasons only “affinity groups” inside and outside the camp knew the exact time and location of events, as well as the chosen targets.
She did, however, add that the group was taking action because “this system is broken. 10,000 a year still die from fuel poverty while prices continue to rise.
“This government thinks that it has the right to run roughshod over our planet in an ever-more desperate attempt to extract fossil fuels. We’re not going to take this lying down.”
Last year, RTP took over the headquarters of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, as well as occupying oil company Cuadrilla’s Blackpool offices.
A further 11 sites related to the fracking industry were targeted on the same day.
In Oxfordshire, campaigner Kat Lyons said: “It’s not a lack of technology that’s holding back the transition to renewables, it’s a lack of political willpower. We need to break the stranglehold that energy corporations like the Big 6 have over our democratic decision-making structures.
“We will take direct action against those that profit, promote and fund this industry, and force the government to recognise that the needs of the people are more important than these companies’ profits.”
