Venezuela: Opposed parties make progress in crisis talks

GOVERNMENT and opposition negotiators announced preliminary agreements at the weekend to try to pull Venezuela from its ongoing political and economic crisis.

Among the agreements was a pledge to hold new elections to replace three national assembly opposition deputies dismissed by the Supreme Court for vote-buying.

The parties agreed to respect the autonomy of Venezuela’s legislature and to work to overcome the impasse created by the court’s decision to nullify assembly decisions.
