Labour MP wants Parliament to intervene in football

Labour’s Andy Burnham welcomed greater parliamentary scrutiny for English football yesterday, amid worries a “corrosive money culture” is ruining the fabric of the game.

Burnham served as culture, media and sport secretary in 2008-9 and is now a candidate to become Greater Manchester’s first elected mayor.

Last week Football Association chairman Greg Clarke was called in front of the culture select committee investigating “major failings in the current system of football governance,” and Burnham believes it is essential to arrest the national side’s slump and re-engage with communities.
