Venezuela: Maduro hails currency blow to saboteurs
US ‘behind plan to hoard banknotes abroad’
VENEZUELA’S sudden decision to scrap and replace its most commonly used currency bill was an economic triumph over the country’s enemies, President Nicolas Maduro declared on Sunday.
He said that the prompt action had flooded the country’s banks with currency deposited by citizens hurrying to get rid of the paper bills and simultaneously devastated black-market currency speculators.
Last week’s announcement annulling all 100 bolivar notes — currently worth about £8 at the official exchange rate — led to queues at banks.
