CHRIS SEARLE welcomes a new book that makes working class history come alive in a true story of human flesh and aspiration
H LONDON EXHIBITION
Rose Wylie: Quack Quack
Serpentine Sackler Gallery
West Carriage Drive
London W2
Until February 11 2018. Free.
Octogenarian Rose Wylie finds her inspiration through her daily encounters and a variety of sources, from art history, cinema, comic books and the natural world to news, verbal anecdotes, celebrity stories and sport. These might include a scene from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, a self-portrait eating a chocolate biscuit, an olive oil label or a football match. Instilled with wit, Wylie’s paintings are confident, animated and energetic, proposing new perspectives on the world and the plethora of images that make up our collective cultural memory. Refreshing, potent and unpretentious — great for kids.

H GLASGOW THEATRE
Cinderella
Citizens Theatre
119 Gorbals Street
Glasgow, G5
November 28-December 31 2017
Full of silliness and usual slapstick, music and fun, how else? — this is the perfect choice for families looking for alternative festive entertainment this Christmas. It’s nearly time for the Prince’s ball, etc, etc... but does her heart’s true desire lie closer to home? Dominic Hill works his trademark theatrical style to this twist on a classic fairytale. Miss it at your kids’ peril.

H SOUTHAMPTON AND TOURING MUSIC
Skinny Lister & Beans On Toast
The 1865
Brunswick Square
Southampton SO14
December 7 2017
Skinny Lister play in layered unison to exhilarating effect — there’s no chest-puffing, narcissistic solos here — they are a proper collective endeavour. But it is the stunning vocals, led by Lorna Thomas and Dan Heptinstall, and the choral backing that infuse rare sonic class into this rapturous music, while Beans on Toast will be saving the many from media-inflicted blissful ignorance with politics of engaging and lucid agit-prop immediacy Brechtian style.
