Contracted railway workers to walk out against ‘appalling’ management conduct

RAIL maintenance staff across Britain are set for strike action against the “appalling” conduct of their management.

RMT members contracted by Clarke Chapman Facilities Management, who carry out vital repairs and renewals on Britain’s railway system, will strike over management’s handling of issues related to pay and conditions.

They say that management has not engaged in serious discussions with the union during the dispute.

The action will begin with a two-day weekend strike on August 24-25 followed by a similar walkout the next weekend.

An overtime and rest-day working ban will also remain in force.

A previous strike in late July led to all of the contractor’s scheduled work being cancelled.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “Our members have been forced to take strike action again in their fight for pay justice at Clarke Chapman Facilities Management.

“I would like to congratulate them for their steadfast determination.

“Last time they took action, all of the company’s planned work was cancelled.

“This was an absolutely fantastic outcome and proves what can happen when union members stand together.

“Despite this shutdown, the company has still not contacted the union to try and resolve this dispute.

“It is clear that they are burying their heads in the sand in hope that the dispute will resolve itself.

“This is an appalling way to hold negotiations and just shows the clear contempt management has for its workers.

“The union remains available for talks aimed at resolving this dispute.”
