Hundreds of Asda staff to protest against new contract

HUNDREDS of Asda workers will take part in a mass demonstration today against the imposition of a “race-to-the-bottom” contract.

The workers, who are members of the GMB union, will march from Leeds city centre from noon.

They are demonstrating against their managers demanding they sign “contract six,” which will deprive them of paid breaks and remove their right not to work over the weekend.

If any Asda worker refuses to sign this contract by November 2, they will face the sack.

Shadow justice secretary Richard Burgon, a local MP and the chair of the GMB’s parliamentary group, is expected to join the workers.

Mr Burgon said: “Workers deserve better than this dreadful race-to-the-bottom treatment by Asda.

“Asda’s owners need to listen to the people who create their very considerable wealth: Asda staff right across the country.

“This is no way to treat people. Asda should get round the table and negotiate rather than forcing staff into an impossible position.”

GMB national officer Gary Carter said: “This demonstration will show Asda bosses how strongly workers feel about this punishing new contract.

“Our members tell us the shocking effect it’s having.

“No-one should have to choose between looking after their disabled son, elderly mother or vulnerable wife and losing their job.

“Bosses may just see profits — but we see people’s lives being ripped apart by this devastating decision.

“Asda was once a Leeds family company, built on Yorkshire values of hard work and respect. The founders would be appalled at what is being done today.”
