Maduro calls US-led OAS a ‘ministry of colonies’

VENEZUELAN President Nicolas Maduro has accused the Organisation of American States (OAS) of acting as colonialists and promoting regime change on behalf of the US across the region.

He was speaking after Monday’s session of the 35-member OAS in Washington when he warned that the US was using the international bloc to attack the people of Latin America and anti-imperialist governments.

"The OAS is a useless organism that suffered an involution and has become again a ministry of colonies of the American empire against revolutionary movements, against progressive peoples and independent anti-imperialist governments,” Mr Maduro blasted.

The OAS general assembly gathered to discuss “the situation in Venezuela,” criticising the recent elections and warned of a possible suspension from the US-led body.

Although Venezuela handed in a letter to the OAS in April 2017 announcing its decision to leave, the country will remain a member until April 2019.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza warned “there is no good imperialism” and vowed, that despite US attempts to destabilise the country, “we will triumph with our Bolivarianism.”

The OAS general assembly meeting concluded yesterday.
