Meet the second tranche of dauntless cyclists pedalling from Liverpool to Hull to raise a massive £10,000 for the Morning Star

KEEPING the Morning Star alive and kicking has always been a challenge.

Now, the Merseyside and Manchester Morning Star Readers and Supporters Groups have come together to set another challenge.

In celebration of our 10th anniversary, Pedal4Progress is going back to its roots — adapting our original coast-2-coast route and welcoming many previous participants to our socialist cycle challenge.

The ride will set off from Liverpool on July 26, passing through Manchester, stopping at Wortley Hall on the 27th, moving on to Selby on 28th and finishing in Hull on the 29th.

But you don’t have to wait for the ride to start before showing your support.

Feel free to dig deep now and give generously to encourage the riders on their way.

Our aim is to raise £10,000 for the Morning Star. It would be fantastic if you and/or your trade union branch or region could help us reach our target figure. Payment details are below.

Mike McKrell

This UCU activist and Manchester CP member broke his collar bone on the 6th edition of the ride but got back on his bike and finished the stage.

Will the hard man of the bunch be breaking records in breakaways, or will Mike get hot under the collar if the peloton passes?

Mike says: “What makes the Morning Star essential reading for me is that it shines a light on the struggles of working people and their communities, home and abroad, that the millionaire media misrepresents, misunderstands or simply ignores.”

Gill Oakes

Sources say that this former 24-hour time trialist fears nobody on the road and could be the one to beat.

Will Gill take a kip between stages, or might she ride all night while the peloton slumbers?

Gill says: “I’m new to the paper, and what a breath of fresh air! No mindless celebrity gossip, pages of adverts for things I can’t afford or the usual smoke and mirrors on the day’s issues. This is a proper paper.”

Bora Oktas

Sharing your name with a professional race team guarantees to get you noticed, but fortunately this NEU organiser from Manchester is no two-wheeled wallflower.

Will his decision to don the jersey be justified, or will Bora’s top be a flop at the school of hard climbs?

Bora says: “I support the Morning Star because it’s opened my eyes. There’s no turning back from discovering the truth.”

Natasha Hickman

This officer of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign will no doubt be delighted that the ride begins on July 26, the same day in 1953 that Fidel stormed the Moncada barracks.

Will Natasha’s revolutions per minute remain stable in Selby, or will she be Havana hard time in Hull controlling her cadence?

Natasha says: “A commitment to internationalism is at the heart of the Morning Star’s international reporting. It’s the only daily that challenges the imperialist narrative and give a voice to working people and progressive causes around the world.”

Pawlo Wintoniuk

Stepping up to his first full challenge, this art director and potter is another regular with the Manchester-based Pedal4Progress riders.

Will Pawlo be directing the ride from the front of the bunch, or will he be spat out the back and potter on painfully?

Pawlo says: “It’s an incredible achievement to get the paper out every day. A miracle, by any stretch of the imagination, that plays a vital role putting across an alternative view for 92 years and long may that continue.”

Maxine Peake

If her acting career is any guide, our Morning Star ambassador and star of stage and screen is sure to put on a bravura performance from the moment the curtain rises.

Will Maxine peak too early, or will she buddy-up with a breakaway and give it her max in the mountains?

Maxine says: “I’m taking part in Pedal4Progress this year as a proud ambassador of the Morning Star and cyclist enthusiast, I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to enjoy the fusion of some of my favourite things. The Star is Britain’s only daily socialist newspaper and the fact we are swamped by divisive hard-right hate generators means it’s imperative we fight to keep this beacon of hope of the left blazing bright!”
