Iran denies involvement in Salman Rushdie attack
In this photo released on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2022, by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani speaks in Tehran, Iran. Kanaani denied on Monday, Aug. 15, 2022, that Tehran was involved in the assault on author Salman Rushdie, in remarks that were the country's first public comments on the attack.

AN IRANIAN government official denied that Tehran was involved in the assault on author Salman Rushdie, today, although he justified the stabbing.

“Regarding the attack against Salman Rushdie in [the United States of] America, we don’t consider anyone deserving reproach, blame or even condemnation, except for (Mr Rushdie) himself and his supporters,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said.

“In this regard, no-one can blame the Islamic Republic of Iran. We believe that the insults made and the support he received was an insult against followers of all religions.”
