THE Tory government is “playing smoke and mirrors” with departmental budgets to hide a massive £28 billion in stealth cuts to strike-hit public services, the TUC said today.
Cuts worth £1,000 per household are due across the NHS, schools and elsewhere in the next five years if Chancellor Jeremy Hunt pushes ahead with his Autumn Statement pledges, the union body warned.
It said that the research – conducted by think tank the New Economics Foundation (NEF) – shows a boost for public services and pay is needed in the Budget on March 15 to protect workers from this year’s expected recession.
