Two heroic saves by Gateshead goalie sends team through to semis

GATESHEAD goalkeeper James Montgomery pulled off two penalty shoot-out saves to put the Tynesiders into the FA Trophy semi-finals — and book himself a place in north-east England football folklore alongside his famous relation Jim Montgomery.

Jim will be long remembered for his amazing double stop to deny Leeds United’s Trevor Cherry and Peter Lorimer in the 1973 FA Cup final as Sunderland shocked the Yorkshiremen at Wembley while James, who was born in Sunderland, will be hoping that he can get the chance to turn out on the famous turf at the national stadium himself as ‘Heed eventually saw off their National League North opponents.

“Credit to Farsley, I thought they were tough opposition and defended really well and when they got the counters they attacked quite well. The boys are over the moon and looking forward to seeing who we get in the draw,” said the 28-year-old former Forest Green Rovers stopper.
