New Zealand team members celebrate after winning the women's gold medal Rugby Sevens match between New Zealand and Canada at the 2024 Summer Olympics, in the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis, France, July 30, 2024

WOMEN’S RUGBY UNION: New Zealand defended their Olympic Sevens title on Tuesday evening after coming back from 12-7 down at half-time to beat Canada 19-12.

The USA edged out Australia 14-12 to take the bronze medal while Britain finished seventh after beating Ireland 28-12.

Australia’s Maddison Levi was the tournament’s top points-scorer after running in 14 tries, just two less than Canada managed in their six games.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Premier League new-boys Southampton have signed Chilean international Ben Brereton-Diaz from Villareal.

Brereton-Diaz didn’t score in 20 games for Villareal but netted six goals in 12 loan appearances for Sheffield United last season.

The Saints have also re-signed 36-year-old Adam Lallana who made over 250 appearances and scored 60 goals for the club before joining Liverpool in 2014.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Defending champions Wigan will look to get back to winning ways and reclaim top spot in the Super League tomorrow evening when they host Huddersfield at Robin Park.

Wigan slumped to a 40-4 home defeat to current table-toppers Warrington last week while Huddersfield lost out 34-6 to Leeds.

Tonight’s other fixture sees Leigh travel to Castleford before Warrington face second-placed Hull Kingston Rovers tomorrow.

MEN’S CYCLING: Seven-time Grand Tour winner Chris Froome has been included on a startlist that includes nine teams from this year’s Tour de France for the Arctic Tour of Norway.

The four-day stage race starts and finishes in Bodo, will take place entirely within the Arctic Circle and includes 6km of gravel tack racing.

Froome’s team-mate Stephen Williams won last year’s race by just one second from Cristian Scaroni.
