Sport in brief with Jamie J: January 13, 2024

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: The wide gulf in Scottish Women’s Premier League standards was highlighted once again as second-placed Rangers rampaged to a 14-0 win at second bottom Queen’s Park, table-topping Glasgow City eased to a 6-1 victory over Aberdeen and third-placed Hibs stuffed Spartans 6-0. Laura Berry bagged a hat-trick as Motherwell won 6-1 at bottom club Dundee United and Celtic overcame Partick Thistle 4-2.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: Cardiff Devils still top the Elite League by three points after they came from behind in both their games to win 3-2 at Manchester and 5-4 in Glasgow while second-placed Belfast, who still have two games in hand on the leaders, enjoyed a double-header victory over Nottingham. Defending champions Sheffield thumped Coventry 5-0 and demolished bottom club Fife 8-0 to remain three points further back in third.

CYCLING: Xan Crees won the British women’s cyclo-cross championships in Gravesend on Sunday after holding off Cat Ferguson by five seconds with Imogen Wolff 39 seconds back in third. Former junior and under-23 world champion Zoe Backstedt did not take part in the race. Cameron Mason claimed his third successive national title in the men’s event after finishing over three minutes ahead of Ben Chilton with Dan Barnes third.
