MEN’S BASKETBALL: Cameron Gooden netted 21 points as the revamped Surrey 89ers gained a narrow 87-85 win over London in their first match of this year’s Super League Trophy.

Defending champions Cheshire came from behind to earn an 84-79 victory at Sheffield on Sunday evening, Leicester brushed aside Bristol 91-69 and Newcastle enjoyed wins over Sheffield and Manchester, who also lost out 99-77 in East Kilbride to Caledonia.

MEN’S CRICKET: Spin twins Prabath Jayasuriya and Nishan Peiris both enjoyed nine-wicket hauls as Sri Lanka thumped New Zealand by an innings and 154 runs to complete a 2-0 series victory.

The result improves the Sri Lankans’ hold on third place in the World Test Championship standings while New Zealand have now slipped down to seventh. Sri Lanka next face South Africa away before two tests at home to Australia.

CYCLING: Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar rode solo for the last 51kms to win Sunday’s World Championship road race in Switzerland and capped an incredible season in which he has also won the Tour de France and Giro D’Italia.

Australian Ben O’Connor finished over half a minute behind in second, with last year’s winner Mathieu van der Poel a further 24 seconds back in third. Oscar Onley was the highest placed Briton in sixteenth.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: The second round of the Champions League group stage kicks off on Tuesday evening with Salzburg hosting Brest and Sparta Prague at Stuttgart before Arsenal face Paris St-Germain in north London and Celtic travel to Borussia Dortmund.

Tomorrow night’s other fixtures include Barcelona, fresh from a 4-2 defeat in Osasuna at the weekend, against Young Boys of Berne, Manchester City at Slovan Bratislava and AC Milan visiting Bayer Leverkusen.
