CANADA: Flight attendants with WestJet, the country’s second-largest airline, went on strike today in a dispute over pay.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents the 4,400 cabin crew at the airline, announced the strike on its Facebook page but did not provide further details. The company had cancelled more than 300 flights as of early yesterday, disrupting travel plans in the middle of a three-day weekend.

 

INDONESIA: A ferry carrying 271 people caught fire in waters off the main island of Java today, leaving at least five people dead and dozens missing.

The Mutiara Sentosa 2 was traveling from Indonesia’s second-largest city of Surabaya in East Java to the city of Makassar in South Sulawesi, with 232 passengers and 39 crew members, when the fire broke out in the early morning in waters off Sumenep regency, according to Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).

 

INDIA: Independent ballistic experts have concluded that injuries sustained by some Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protesters in New Delhi last week were caused by pellet guns, the BBC reported on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses reported police and paramilitary personnel attacking peaceful protesters with wooden sticks, batons and tear gas during last week’s demonstrations. Delhi Police reported that 60 protesters had been killed.

 

PERU: A plane carrying European tourists to view the famed Nazca Lines crashed into a field on Saturday outside the city of Nazca, killing 13 people.

Nazca’s municipal government said the plane had departed from the nearby city of Ica and was operated by Peruvian company Aerodiana.
