UGANDA: Hundreds of people demonstrated outside the Turkish embassy today to demand the extradition of a dissident whose online activities are seen by local authorities as anti-government propaganda.

Fred Lumbuye has lived for years in Turkey, but his legal status there is unclear. His posts about Ugandan politics are viewed by thousands of people.

 

MALAWI: Four suspects were fatally shot in a police operation that rescued a British woman who had been kidnapped last week.

The woman, Nusrat Osman, was safe and had been reunited with her family in the southern African country, Malawian police said in a statement on Thursday night.

They said four suspected kidnappers, armed with an AK-47 rifle and a pistol, had been killed in a shootout with police. 

 

PHILIPPINES: A shooting today at a high school in the country’s south left at least three young people dead and six others injured, including the gunman. 

South Cotabato province disaster response official Rolly Doane Aquino said three people had been killed and six hospitalised after the shooting at Banga National High School in the town of Banga.

 

UNITED STATES: An immigration officer accused of shooting a Venezuelan man during an immigration crackdown in Minneapolis early this year and then lying to investigators about what happened was set to appear in a US district court last night.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Christian Castro is accused of making false statements about the January shooting of Julio Cesar Sosa-Cellis.
