UKRAINE: Russian planes have dropped eight powerful glide bombs on the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, killing one person and wounding dozens, regional chief Ivan Fedorov said yesterday.

Meanwhile, six people were killed by Ukrainian drone debris in Arkhipo-Osipovka, a small town in the Krasnodar region on Russia’s Black Sea coast, regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said, adding that 40 were wounded.

 

GHANA: Parliament has passed legislation that could send cocoa farmers to prison for up to 20 years if they convert their farms to other uses without government approval.

The new measure was passed on Thursday, but the contents of the law were not made public until Sunday night. President John Mahama has not yet signed the legislation.

 

SUDAN: At least 35 people have been killed in an army drone strike on a civil court in the Darfur region, according to a human rights group.

Emergency Lawyers, an independent group documenting atrocities in Sudan, said on Sunday afternoon that drones had targeted the headquarters of the civil court in al-Zawiya Gara village in North Darfur state, “a civilian facility that plays a judicial and social role in the region.”

 

MYANMAR: Detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi met International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representative in the capital Naypyidaw yesterday, the military-backed government said, in a rare moment of contact with the outside world for the Nobel laureate who has been held out of public view since the military seized power in 2021.

Two photographs published with the announcement showed Ms Suu Kyi shaking hands with Arnaud de Baecque, the ICRC representative to Myanmar.
