Political songwriting is alive and kicking those it should, says Kofi Smith

Something of a successor to last year’s Orgreave Justice and Hope Not Hate compilations, brand new double album Don’t Be Left Without Us showcases two packed CDs of brilliant current music including a wealth of politically committed songwriting alongside assorted tunes by left-aligned artists.

It has become a dreadful cliche that “there’s no political music any more,” but one that the corporate media is happy to repeat, making an implied comparison with the eras of Thatcher and Vietnam, while the truth is more complicated.
