INDONESIA: Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano erupted early yesterday, prompting the cancellation of all flights at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and disrupting other domestic airports as volcanic ash drifted across parts of western Indonesia. 

Indonesia’s Geological Agency said the volcanic island located in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait between the main Java and Sumatra islands had shown signs of activity since Friday before erupting early Sunday morning. 

COLOMBIA: An attack involving explosives dropped from drones followed by a clash inside a military compound in north-eastern Colombia has killed at least three soldiers and wounded four, Colombia’s army said Saturday.

Local authorities blamed the attack late Friday on the rebel National Liberation Army. It targeted a military unit in the municipality of Ocana, in the Norte de Santander department. Two soldiers died at the site and a third after receiving medical attention, Colombia’s military said on social media.

INDIA: A building collapsed in New Delhi yesterday, killing at least one person and trapping several others, officials said.

The five-storey building, which housed a boys’ hostel, collapsed in Satya Niketan, a densely populated neighbourhood known for its private student accommodations near a Delhi University campus.

Authorities did not immediately say how many people remained trapped.

CAPE VERDE: At least 25 people, mostly teenagers, were killed in a traffic accident in the African island nation of Cape Verde, local media and officials said yesterday.

The accident, which occurred on the Campanas de Cima route, a mountainous area in Fogo Island, occurred on Saturday and involved a passenger bus. Several people were also injured.
