THE United States Treasury Secretary warns that Washington is aiming to “sever every economic lifeline” that sustains Iran.
In an opinion piece for Monday’s Financial Times, Secretary Scott Bessent claimed that the US war on Iran is entering an “endgame,” with an “economic D-Day” coming for Tehran.
US President Donald Trump announced last week that the US would target Iran with economic sanctions, Mr Bessent said Washington will wage “the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary.”
Mr Bessent has previously warned that this new economic warfare could include more secondary sanctions on other nations and companies that conduct business with Iran.
He said: “The president has created the conditions to leverage every agency, every authority and action many assumed we would never summon.
“Any remaining tie to Tehran will hasten the economic ostracism of countries and entities, whether that tie be purposefully constructed or wilfully ignored.”
Mr Bessent said: “The world should understand that our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains the tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone.”
On Sunday, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country is in an “all-out” economic, military and security war with its “enemies.”
Despite the US pressure, “we are standing and making efforts to serve the people in the face of this unequal war,” Mr Pezeshkian said in a televised speech carried by the IRNA news agency.
The government is making “wholehearted” efforts to reduce inflation and resolve people’s economic problems, said.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that the US must speak respectfully with the Iranian people, according to IRNA.
He described how the anti-Iran economic operation claimed by US President Donald Trump is a “recurring scenario and the same bullying that always occurs in US policies.”
He said: “In a sense, it is a repetitive film that we have watched over and over and know how to deal with.”
In a social media post last Wednesday, Mr Trump announced “the most crushing economic operation ever taken” against any country providing a lifeline to Iran.
“This will be economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale,” he said, calling the move “an economic D-Day.”
On June 18, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on ending the war in the region on all fronts, including Lebanon. But the US broke the deal with fresh air attacks on Iran.
