Debt gap with England grows, but poorer Scots still less likely to go to university
POORER students in Scotland continue to be less likely to reach university, despite average student debt being less than a third of the figure in England, new data shows.
According to SNP-commissioned statistics published by the House of Commons library today, student debt has rocketed since the introduction of tuition fees two decades ago.
In 2000, average student debt on graduation stood at just £2,690 in England and £2,620 in Scotland.
Cuts are sweeping campuses as cash-strapped universities slash staff and politicians fail to act on a growing funding emergency. VINCE MILLS reports
