WSL returns to action following international break
Manchester City's Kerolin celebrates with manager Andree Jeglertz after being susbituted during the Barclays Women's Super League match at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester, February 1, 2026

MANCHESTER CITY boss Andree Jeglertz described Aston Villa as a “tough opponent” ahead of the clash between the two sides in the Women’s Super League tomorrow.

The WSL returns to action this weekend following international break and City are aiming to continue their title push, where they sit eight points clear at the summit with six league games left.

Sunday’s opponents Villa are at the opposite end in ninth and enter the game on the back of four straight league defeats, including a bruising 7-3 defeat to Spurs in their last outing, but Jeglertz is still expecting a tough test.

He told a press conference: “Watching Aston Villa in many games, I think it’s a good team. They’ve been struggling a couple of weeks but at the same time in all those games they create chances and they score some goals also.

“It’s definitely a team that will challenge us if we don’t perform on the level that we need to.

“It was the same when we played here, even though the result became pretty big in the end it was a tight game for a long time during it. It will be a tough opponent on Sunday.”

Arsenal are also in action with a trip to London City Lionesses and head coach Renee Slegers confirmed Beth Mead could be in contention.

She said: “No fresh injuries so that’s really good. Beth has been progressing well during the international break, so hopefully if this stays well and goes as planned she’s available for minutes against London City.”

London City have enjoyed an impressive maiden campaign in the WSL since being promoted last season, sitting sixth with 19 points from 16 league games.

Speaking about Sunday’s opponents, Slegers said: “At the moment they are very stable in the table and you see that’s hard when you come up from the WSL2 to stabilise and do the right things to be able to do that.

“I think they’ve done that. They recruited a lot of experienced players and that’s been a strategy, as it looks like from the outside, to build something stable in the first season in the WSL.

“I think they’ve done that well, they have a quality of players and, like I said, a stable position in the table.”

Elsewhere tomorrow, bottom-side Leicester travel to Liverpool with only one point separating the pair and Tottenham come up against Everton.
