TURKEY: Police have arrested 161 suspected members of the Islamic State terrorist group over the last week, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said today.
The suspects were active within the group and providing financial support, he said in a post on X. They were detained in 38 of Turkey’s 81 provinces, including the capital Ankara and largest city Istanbul.
Yerlikaya said unlicensed firearms, IS documents and digital materials were seized in the raids.
UKRAINE: France said today that it is deploying fighter jets to Poland, and Britain announced fresh sanctions targeting Russia's oil revenues and war machine as Europe's first measured steps to deal with Russia's drone incursion into Poland.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he would deploy three advanced Rafale fighter jets to help protect Poland's airspace and Nato's eastern flank to fulfill a commitment he made to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
TAIWAN STRAIT: China’s newest aircraft carrier has sailed through the Taiwan Strait, the navy said today. The body of water separates China from Taiwan.
The Fujian, which is doing sea trials ahead of its commissioning, was heading to the South China Sea to conduct training and scientific experiments, the navy said in a short post on social media.
AUSTRALIA: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said today that his government will “carefully consider” the recommendations of an independent report which found that anti-Muslim incidents in the country has “skyrocketed since the beginning of Israel genocidal assault on Palestinians in Gaza.”
Mr Albanese said that targeting Australians on the basis of their religious beliefs was an attack on the core values of the country.
