
IRAN: Authorities have hanged a man who was convicted of spying for Israel, local media reported today.
Pedram Madani was executed after the Supreme Court upheld a death sentence issued by a lower court, the IRNA news agency said.
Accoring to IRNA, Mr Madani had visited Israel and met Mossad officers to convey classified information about sensitive buildings in Iran.
GERMANY: A court ruled against a Peruvian farmer today in a landmark climate lawsuit after he alleged that global warming fuelled by energy company RWE’s historical greenhouse-gas emissions put his home at risk.
Farmer and mountain guide Saul Luciano Lliuya said that glaciers above his home town of Huaraz were melting, increasing the risk of catastrophic flooding.
RWE denied legal responsibility, arguing that climate change was a global problem. There is no right of appeal.
BANGLADESH: Tens of thousands of students and youths from a leading political party rallied in the capital Dhaka today, calling for a general election to be held in December as discontent grows with the interim government appointed after the overthrow of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in August.
Activists from groups linked to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, headed by former prime minister Khaleda Zia, gathered on the streets outside the party’s headquarters.
SPAIN: Four women and three girls died today when a small boat carrying migrants capsized after leaving a port on one of the Canary Islands.
Spain’s maritime rescue service, which located the boat some six miles from shore, said the boat tipped over as rescuers started removing minors after it arrived at a dock on the island of El Hierro.
