
GREECE: A deputy minister resigned today following allegations of evidence tampering at the site of the 2023 rail disaster near Tempe that claimed 57 lives when two trains were involved in a head-on collision.
Christos Triantopoulos, deputy minister for civil protection, stepped down following claims by the main opposition party that he participated in unauthorised alterations at the crash site.
He denies the accusations.
PAKISTAN: The bodies of four Pakistanis who were among dozens who drowned in the capsizing of a migrant boat off West Africa last month have been repatriated.
Their remains were brought home from Morocco overnight by a Saudi flight that landed at the Islamabad International Airport, officials said today.
The bodies were later buried in their hometowns in Punjab province.
INDIA: Parliament was disrupted today as opposition lawmakers protested against the alleged mistreatment of 104 Indian immigrants deported by the United States.
The lawmakers and media reports said the deportees’ arms and legs were shackled while on the aircraft.
Parliament’s proceedings were adjourned today as the lawmakers chanted slogans and demanded a discussion about the deportation.
NIGERIA: At least 17 children were killed in a fire that broke out in an Islamic school in north-western Nigeria, the country’s emergency response agency said today.
About 100 children were at the school when the fire broke out on Wednesday in the Kaura Namoda district of Zamfara state, the National Emergency Management Agency said in a statement.
Seventeen children were seriously injured and were being treated at different hospitals, the agency said.
It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.
