Weld thinking big now Purview has come of age
Trainer Dermot Weld after winning the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Glencairn Stakes with Tarawa at Leopardstown Racecourse, Dublin, June 6, 2024

DERMOT WELD has some “major targets” in mind for Purview following his runaway success at the Curragh last month.

A winner on his sole juvenile start at Dundalk, the Kingman colt bumped into some smart sorts in the first half of his three-year-old campaign, most notably dual Group One winner Delacroix, before rounding off his season with a Listed success at Cork.

He made a fairly spectacular return to action in Listed Orby Stakes on his return to action on Irish Guineas weekend, rocketing six lengths clear of the chasing pack, and while Weld is unsure where his charge will turn up for his next start, he is looking forward to campaigning him at a higher level in due course.

He said: “He came out of his race very well. I haven’t gone through it in great detail, obviously we’ve discussed it [plans] briefly and we have an open mind.

“It’s a long year and at the end of the year I’d have major targets in mind but his next race, we’ve haven’t really decided yet. Hopefully we’ll make up our minds next week. There is no major panic at the moment, we’re looking at a long year for him please God.

“He was very impressive at the Curragh and he’s a lovely, big horse. He’s fulfilling the promise we always thought he had.

“I was mad keen to run him over a mile and a half and he enjoyed his race. Onwards and upwards.”
