Police tear gas thousands of anti-coup government protesters in Peru's capital
Police block demonstrators who are marching against President Dina Boluarte in downtown Lima, Peru, Thursday, January 19, 2023

POLICE fired tear gas in a severe clampdown against thousands of protesters who poured into the Peruvian capital Lima on Thursday.

The protesters, many from remote Andean regions, called for the removal of the congress appointed president Dina Boluarte and the return to power of her predecessor, Pedro Castillo.

The coup against Mr Castillo in December launched a wave of deadly unrest and has cast the nation into political chaos.
