THE first person to face trial over the storming of the US Capitol has been found guilty on all counts by a court.
Guy Reffitt, from Texas, was convicted of five charges today, including the obstruction of an official proceeding and interfering with police in a riot.
Jurors took under four hours to unanimously convict the 49-year-old.
The decision could set a precedent for the hundreds of other cases related to January 6 2021 that will come to trial in the months ahead.
Mr Reffitt was among the mob of Donald Trump supporters that stormed the government building as lawmakers met to confirm his successor Joe Biden’s presidential win.
The oilfield worker and suspected member of far-right group the Three Percenters drove to Washington DC to participate in the riot and led fellow members of the militia group up the Capitol’s staircase to the building.
In court, prosecutors used Mr Reffitt’s own words against him, telling jurors that he “lit the match” during the riot.
They were aided by multiple videos taken on and after January 6, in which he discussed planning and later bragged about his participation.
Among those who testified against him was his 19-year-old son Jackson, who said his father threatened him to keep quiet.
“He said ‘if you turn me in, you’re a traitor’,” the younger Mr Reffitt testified.
“And traitors get shot.”
Mr Reffitt faces up to 60 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for June 8.
More than 750 people have been arrested for their role in the January 6 riot, including members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.
While most have been charged with misdemeanours, about 40 have received prison sentences.
Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the far-right Proud Boys group, has been charged with conspiracy in connection with the Capitol riot after his arrest on Tuesday morning in Miami.
Mr Tarrio and other leaders planned the events, allegedly amassing financial resources and tactical gear through fundraising sites, communicated their intentions through encrypted messaging apps and encouraged Proud Boys members to attend.
The 38-year-old was not present at the riot himself having been arrested two days earlier for burning a Black Lives Matter flag and possessing two high-capacity ammunition magazines.
