THOUSANDS took to the streets of Venezuela on Tuesday to demand that the United States release the country’s President Nicolas Maduro and “first combatant” — the Venezuelan term for the head of state’s spouse — Cilia Flores.

The two were kidnapped by the US on January 3 during a deadly raid which left more than 100 people dead. They have been held in a New York detention facility since then.

Under slogans like “hands off Venezuela!” and “no to colonialism and fascism,” protesters denounced the flagrant violation of international law by the US.

The head of the Caracas regional government, Nahum Fernandez, told a huge rally that the people were marching for peace and stability in Venezuela.

He said: “We are a fully sovereign country and we must maintain that sovereignty.

“Today from Zulia to Caracas, we have seen a great demonstration of support.”

Taking part in the march was Maria Mercedes Martinez, a resident of Caracas. She said: “We, the artists, the poets, and the general public, have gathered to demand the return of the president and his wife, our First Lady Cilia Flores.

“Here we are today, not only Venezuelans but also several delegations from other countries that are resisting, just like us.”
