University rector 'vindicated' on Gaza solidarity
A general view of the Sports Department at the University of St Andrews

THE rector of Scotland oldest university who was barred from its governing body last year for speaking out against Israel’s genocide in Gaza celebrated her “vindication” today after the decision was overturned.

Stella Maris was removed from her role as trustee and President of the Court of St Andrews University after issuing a statement condemning Israel’s “genocidal attacks” on the people of Gaza.

Ray Perman, chairman of the university court, said at the time that she was “in serious and persistent breach of her responsibilities.”

But the university’s chancellor, former Lib Dem Leader Sir Menzies Campbell, has upheld Ms Maris’s appeal against the decision.

Ms Maris thanked those who had “stood in solidarity” with her and vowed to “continue campaigning to ensure the right to political expression and academic freedom.”

She said: “This decision is not only a vindication of my position but a defence of the fundamental principles of free expression and democratic accountability within our universities.

“Universities must remain places where individuals are free to speak out against injustice.”

St Andrews University said the “university court is carefully considering the chancellor’s decision and taking advice from counsel.”
