United prepared to fill schedule gaps in ‘different ways,’ Carrick says as club contemplates mid-season friendlies
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick celebrates the win after the Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium, London, January 25, 2026

MICHAEL CARRICK says Manchester United are prepared to fill gaps in their schedule in “different ways” as the club discusses whether to push ahead with mid-season friendlies.

The Red Devils’ first season without European football since 2014/15 was compounded by falling at the first hurdle of both the League Cup and FA Cup, leaving them with their fewest number of games in 111 years.

To make up for that shortfall in revenue, former head coach Ruben Amorim confirmed in October that mid-season friendlies were planned to boost the coffers, saying “we have to do it” and “compensate (for) a lot of things.”

There are three spaces in the schedule, including a 13-day gap following Tuesday’s game at West Ham, and Saudi Arabia has long been mentioned as a possible destination for a money-spinning trip.

United head coach Carrick said: “At this stage nothing’s confirmed.

“We’re aware of the schedule and there is some kind of spaces, if you like, that we can use in different ways, so it’s all up for discussion at the moment.

“But nothing’s been decided. It might happen, it might not. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

No plans are in place for after next week’s clash with the Hammers, but another gap follows between the match at Newcastle on March 4 and home game against Aston Villa on March 15.

Another gap for friendlies or just a warm weather camp follows in the week between March’s international fortnight and facing rivals Leeds, which is currently scheduled for April 11.

United’s immediate focus is on extending Carrick’s perfect start to life in charge when Tottenham arrive at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime, with the Reds having beaten Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham.

Patrick Dorgu will be absent with a hamstring injury, while Matthijs de Ligt – who has not played since November 30 – and Mason Mount are also sidelined.

“Probably Mason (will be available) sooner,” Carrick said ahead of facing his former club Spurs. “He’s not too far away really, so we’re hopeful it won’t be too long at all for Mase.

“Matta, he’s working his way back, he’s taking good steps and he’s improving. It’s been really positive.

“It’s a little bit too soon at the moment but, hopefully, it won’t be too long as well.”
