Unipart rail staff in Crewe strike over union derecognition

RAIL workers at Unipart Rail’s Crewe Depot walked out today over the firm’s “disgraceful” decision to strip them of RMT union recognition.

RMT described the move as an assault on workplace rights, saying that it has sparked outrage among staff who are demanding their right to collective representation be immediately restored.

Further strike action is planned for February 25, and a new ballot has also been launched to renew its mandate for industrial action.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “Unipart Rail’s attempt to silence its workforce by removing union recognition is disgraceful.

“Tuesday’s strike will send a clear message that our members will not accept this attack on their rights.

“Unipart needs to do the right thing and reverse this assault on our members’ collective rights.”

A Unipart spokesperson said that it decided to “move forward” with one union representing the workers, which it believes “will work better for members covered by the Crewe collective bargaining unit agreement.

“As part of this process we ended voluntary recognition for the RMT union at the site, affecting a small number of colleagues who have unfortunately elected to take industrial action.”
