Trump shows how racism, austerity, climate and war interlink, CND says
US President-elect Donald Trump at a meeting with House Republicans in Washington, November 13, 2024

DONALD TRUMP shows how war, racism, austerity, climate breakdown and nuclear annihilation are interlinked, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) has argued.

New CND general secretary Sophie Bolt warned that the US president-elect’s open support for annexation of the West Bank has emboldened Israel’s “genocidal expansionism” and made an all-out war with Iran more likely.

Despite his claim that he can end the Ukraine war in 24 hours, there is “absolutely no evidence” to suggest he will abandon Nato, Ms Bolt wrote her first blog post as CND general secretary on Wednesday.

“On the contrary, Trump has called on Nato states to increase defence spending to 3 per cent of GDP, so continuing to push the burden of funding onto the populations of Nato states,” she added. “This means the toxic combination of increased militarism, nuclear dangers and austerity policies will continue across Europe.”

She said that the billionaire bigot’s election victory would also encourage the far right across the globe, warning that Reform UK leader Nigel Farage MP and jailed English Defence League co-founder Tommy Robinson “will be emboldened further to whip up hatred, justifying greater military spending for another world war.”

The Republican leader’s new team for the State Department includes ultra-hawks Marco Rubio, expected to be nominated secretary of state, and Mike Waltz, who has been lined up for the post of national security adviser.

“And as the US is one of the world’s largest polluters, Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate accord again is another major setback for climate action and investment in green technologies,” Ms Bolt said.

“This shows more starkly than ever how war, racism, austerity, climate breakdown and nuclear annihilation are increasingly interlinked.

“We can’t allow this recklessly dangerous leader to drag the world towards annihilation.”
