Trump and Ukraine: following the money
President Donald Trump meets with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office at the White House, August 18, 2025, in Washington

“FOLLOW the money” is a catchphrase taken from the 1976 docudrama All the President’s Men about the Watergate scandal in the US. In the case of Gaza, this suggests that Trump hasn’t abandoned his original plan to turn the Strip into a coastal resort, with plenty of real-estate opportunities, but nothing for the local people.

It’s also worth “following the money” with regard to Trump’s vacillation over the war in Ukraine. He had already done a deal with the Zelensky regime for US access to Ukrainian mineral resources in return for purchases of weapons. But, with recent Russian advances on the battlefield, he likely sees that access slipping away.

Despite grand statements from Europe, aid to Ukraine is dropping, says the Neue Zurcher Zeitung. Sunday’s Independent quotes British Field Marshall Lord Richards saying that Ukraine cannot triumph against Russia unless Nato forces join the fight. Trump is reflecting the realities on the ground, and hoping still to pull some irons out of the fire.

The peoples of Ukraine and Russia need a genuine peace, not one which still involves a role for Nato and the US.
