Transport union leaders condemn US-Israeli war on Iran

Eddie Dempsey of the RMT and Maryam Eslamdoust of TSSA speak out against brutal war launched as negotiations were under way

THE leaders of the RMT and TSSA transport unions have condemned the war launched against Iran by the United States and Israel on Saturday morning.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said: “The illegal and unjustified bombing of Iran is a disaster for civilians in the region.

“Progress was being made in nuclear talks, and a peaceful solution was clearly within reach.

“However, this attack which has already seen scores of Iranian civilians killed and retaliatory strikes by Iran now inches the world closer to a potential global war between superpowers.

“It is incumbent on the British government to not in any way support this US-led military aggression or to put our armed forces and civilian support staff in harm’s way.

“Disputes between nation states must be settled by diplomacy and peaceful dialogue through lawful international institutions not warmongering and assassinating other countries’ leaders.”

TSSA leader Maryam Eslamdoust, attended the emergency rally at Parliament Square in protest at the bombings yesterday afternoon.

She told the Morning Star: “This attack on Iran by the US, backing Israel, is so deranged.

“Iran was at the table for talks, and yet the bombs are falling despite the negotiations progressing — making people question what diplomacy even means anymore.

“We’ve seen civilian deaths, including schoolchildren, and that’s horrifying. Trump’s behaviour towards Iran and Venezuela proves that countries can’t rely on negotiations or restraint to keep them safe.

“This needs to stop now before any more Iranian lives are lost and politicians calling for Iran to refrain from defending itself should sit down.”
