TRADE unionists today welcomed the Welsh government’s adoption of their “Twf” — Welsh Language at Work Charter.
TUC Cymru developed the Twf Charter to help workers, trade union branches and employers work together to ensure Welsh can be used at work.
“We’re pleased that the Welsh government recognises the importance of creating inclusive bilingual workplaces and will be encouraging all employers across Wales to adopt the Twf Charter,” TUC Cymru’s Julie Cook said.
“We want to see an increase in workplaces where workers can use and develop their Welsh language skills and work in Welsh on a day-to-day basis.
“Trade unions have a critical role in safeguarding and promoting workers’ Welsh language rights and ensuring that workplaces are safe and free from prejudice and judgment.”
Welsh government permanent secretary Dr Andrew Goodall said: “Our aim is to become a truly bilingual organisation by 2050.
“TUC Cymru’s Twf Charter will help us celebrate our current internal use of Welsh, whilst also supporting us to work with our unions and their members.
“As well as being on our own internal journey of increasing the use of Welsh at work, we also want to see every workplace across Wales adopt the Twf Charter.”
Prospect branch secretary Robin Bradfield said: “As unions, we can support our members and workers to identify, organise and secure more opportunities for everyone to increasingly use Welsh at work.”
PCS branch organiser Stephanie Landeryou said: “PCS is supporting our branches across Wales to work with our trade union partners and employers to adopt the Twf Charter.”
