Stop Trump's war on Cuba, MPs demand

STOP Trump’s war on Cuba, MPs demanded outside Parliament today.

Labour and Independent MPs, together with peers, rallied to raise resistance to the US blockade of and threats against the socialist island.

They demanded that the UK government publicly oppose US aggression, defend international law and support Cuba’s right to self-determination.

The event, organised by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign, comes amid mounting global concern about the intensified economic sanctions and bellicose rhetoric from Washington.

Leeds East MP Richard Burgon accused Trump of “trying to strangle the Cuban people into submission.

No oil for schools, hospitals, food and transport.

It is completely immoral and illegal going further in sanctions than any other president before.

“No to Trump’s war on Cuba.”

Independent Leicester South MP Shockat Adam told the Star that the “silence from the government” on the issue “is deafening. We must show solidarity at this time.”

Salford MP Rebecca Long Bailey told the Star that the threats “against Cuba are illegal and unacceptable, contrary to international law. The world should stand against the aggressor.”

And Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett said that “there is a bad man in the White House.

“The Cuban people are showing immense courage. It is time for the world to stand up to Trump.”

Poplar MP Apsana Begum warned that Trump “is denying the Cuban people essential supplies. We need the government to speak up.”

And Montgomery MP Steve Witherden told the Star that the event showed “solidarity with the Cuban people and our total collective condemnation of Trump’s threats and aggression.”

Cuba Solidarity Campaign director Rob Miller said:The Cuban people are already enduring immense hardship as a result of the US blockade and the latest measures designed to starve the island of fuel.

“At this dangerous moment, the UK government must make clear its opposition to any military intervention or further escalation against Cuba.

“We are bringing together parliamentarians, trade union leaders and campaigners to send a simple message: No Trump war on Cuba.”

Other MPs attending included Labour’s Ian Byrne, Diane Abbott, John McDonnell, Clive Lewis, Lorraine Beavers and Imran Hussain, and independent MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Ayoub Khan.
