Seneca Knight top-scored with 19 points as the Newcastle Eagles began their European North League group A campaign with a 91-84 win at Slovakia’s Spisski Rytieri on Wednesday night.
In Group B Bristol lost their second match in a row after going down 69-79 at home to nine-time German champions Bamberg Baskets.
Bristol next host unbeaten Legia Warsaw, while Newcastle face winless Spartak Pleven on Tuesday.
ICE HOCKEY:
Mitchell Balmas netted the winner as Sheffield Steelers beat Czechia’s Dynamo Pardubice 3-2 after a shoot-out to become only the second team in British Elite League history to reach the last 16 of the Champions Hockey League.
They will face Eisbaren Berlin over two legs in the next round.
Nottingham, in 2018, are the only other British team to reach the knock-out stages of the competition.
MEN’S RUGBY UNION:
Exeter travel to Newcastle tomorrow evening as the English Premiership’s two teams without a win square off at Kingston Park.
Newcastle lost all 18 of their games last season and seven days ago were thumped 43-10 by Sale, who face reigning champions Northampton in tonight’s other game.
League leaders Bristol face Saracens in a top of the table clash on Saturday afternoon.
