Fifa backs checks at World Cup but resistance remains over extending VAR’s role
MEN’S CRICKET: India are 1-0 up when they face New Zealand for the second leg of their three-match one-day series in Rajkot today. The Indians took the first match by four wickets largely thanks to Virat Kohli’s run-a-ball 93 and captain Shubman Gill’s 56 as they chased down the Kiwi target of 301 with an over to spare. The Indians are ranked as the world’s best one day team, one place above New Zealand.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Pascal Siakam hit a late two-pointer as Indiana climbed off the bottom of the NBA with a surprise 98-96 win over high-flying Boston on Tuesday morning. Defending champions Oklahoma City continued their recovery from a minor blip in form as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander again top-scored with 29 points in their 124-112 defeat of Miami that keeps them top of the pile before they host San Antonio tomorrow.
MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: British rugby league left itself open to ridicule once again after Monday’s Challenge Cup third round draw. The tie with the most permutations sees 1987’s champions Halifax or Telford Raiders or London Chargers up against either Woodhouse Warriors, Mirfield or the Goole Vikings. Cup holders Hull Kingston Rovers will face the winners from the Castleford Lock Lane v Brighouse Rangers match.
MEN’S FOOTBALL: Jonathan Ikone scored the only goal of the game against his old club as Paris FC knocked holders Paris St Germain out of the French Cup on Monday night. The near neighbours had been merged for three years in the 1970s and were playing only their fourth competitive match against each other. Last year’s runners-up Reims needed penalties to beat third tier Le Puy Foot and make it into the last 16.
