Sport in brief with Jamie J: May 17, 2024

WOMEN’S CRICKET: The Twenty20 Charlotte Edwards Cup begins tomorrow with holders Southern Vipers, captained by Georgia Adams but missing six players to England call-ups, taking on last year’s runners-up The Blaze at Southampton. The action continues tomorrow as Lancashire Thunder welcome the Northern Diamonds to Old Trafford, Central Sparks play the Sunrisers and Western Storm meet the South East Stars in Bristol.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Stranraer host East Kilbride in the second leg of their Scottish League Two promotion/relegation final at Stair Park on Saturday afternoon with the scores level at 2-2. Stranraer, the third oldest club in Scotland behind Queens Park and Kilmarnock, finished bottom of League Two while East Kilbride, who only reformed in 2010, cantered to the Lowland League title, 12 points ahead of runners-up Hearts B.

DARTS: Michael Smith beat World Champion Luke Humphries 6-3 in the final of Thursday night’s Premier League of Darts in Sheffield and sealed his place at next week’s play-offs in London. He joins top seed Luke Littler, Humphries and Michael van Gerwen in the season’s finale. Peter Wright’s miserable Premier League campaign ended with another defeat after he lost 6-4 to Luke Littler in his first match.

BASKETBALL: British basketball’s season comes to a close tomorrow afternoon with both the men’s and women’s play-off finals at the O2 Arena. Regular season champions London Lions, who have won the women’s play-offs for the last three years, take on Newcastle while the London men’s team are defending their crown against Cheshire Phoenix, who defeated the Lions in January’s final of the BBL Trophy.
