Sport in brief with Jamie J: January 19, 2025

SPEEDWAY: Last year’s Premiership wooden spoon holders Birmingham have completed an impressive squad for the upcoming season with the signing of Antti Vuolas from reigning champions Belle Vue. The 25-year-old Finn will be part of a completely reshaped Brummies line-up that includes fellow new recruits Keynan Rew from Ipswich, Matej Zagar, Tobiasz Musielak and Denmark’s former World Cup champion Michael Jepsen Jensen.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Forest Green still top the National League by a point after they edged out Rochdale1-0 while Barnet won 3-0 in Southend to move second following York’s surprise 2-1 home loss to Sutton. At the other end of the table bottom club Ebbsfleet drew 1-1 at Woking, Boston were cast aside 3-0 by Tamworth, Wealdstone drew 1-1 with Hartlepool and Maidenhead beat fellow strugglers Fylde 4-1 to climb out of the relegation zone.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Donovan Mitchell top-scored with 36 points as Cleveland Cavaliers hit back from Friday’s heavy defeat at Oklahoma City with a 124-117 victory in Minnesota this morning. The Cavs have lost only six games all season and have a huge lead in the Eastern Conference over last year’s champions Boston, who lost to Atlanta after over-time. Cleveland host Phoenix tonight while the Celtics are at the Golden State Warriors.

WOMEN’S CRICKET: The first leg of England’s three-match Ashes Twenty20 series with Australia starts in Sydney this morning. After suffering heavy defeats in all of the one-day games the English must win every short-format fixture to have any chance of regaining the Ashes that they last held in 2014. Australia have won three and drawn two of the last five series to maintain a 10-year grip on the trophy.
