ICE HOCKEY: Sheffield Steelers set a new Elite League attendance record when a crowd of 9,512 saw them overcome Nottingham Panthers 5-4 after overtime on Boxing Day. The Panthers hit back by coming from behind to win Saturday evening’s reverse fixture 4-3 despite Mitchell Balmas netting a hat-trick for the Steelers. Cardiff Devils took advantage of their clashes to move top of the table with two victories over Coventry.
MEN’S BOXING: Japan’s Naoya Inoue extended his unbeaten record to 32 fights after comprehensively outpointing Mexican David Picasso to retain his undisputed super-bantamweight belts in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. It was Inoue’s fourth title defence in 2025 and Picasso’s first defeat in 34 bouts. On the undercard Inoue’s prospective next opponent, former bantamweight champion Junto Nakatani beat Sebastian Hernandez Reyes on points.
MEN’S RUGBY UNION: Munster failed to take advantage of United Rugby Championship table-topping Cape Town’s inactivity after slipping to an 8-13 home defeat against defending champions Leinster at Thomond Park. Jamie Dobie scored two tries as Glasgow thumped Edinburgh 21-3 to claim the 1872 Cup and move within three points of Cape Town in fourth while Ulster edged to a 29-24 victory at Connacht and Zebre went down 23-37 to Treviso.
MEN’S FOOTBALL: It’s first against third in the English Championship tomorrow evening as runaway leaders Coventry host Ipswich. Second-placed Middlesbrough meet a Hull City team that are level on points with Ipswich in fourth. Among tonight’s full fixture list bottom-of-the-table Sheffield Wednesday, 30 points from safety and with only one win all season, take on Blackburn while Preston look to extend their seven-match unbeaten run at Wrexham.
