LARRY LAGE writes about the growth of tackle football and how it provides female athletes opportunities in a game previously dominated by men
RACING: A horse has been renamed after connections apologised for a “totally innocent mistake” in their original naming of the filly.
Jungle Bells, a daughter of Bungle Inthejungle, made her racecourse debut at Wolverhampton on Saturday evening, finishing sixth of 11 runners under the name Jungle Bunny.
The name – a racist term when referring to a black person – was picked up on social media, leading the British Horseracing Authority to say that it is “deeply offensive and should not have been permitted.”
FOOTBALL: Stuart McCall has left his post as manager of Bradford City, the League Two club announced yesterday.
The 56-year-old, who had been in his third spell in permanent charge at Valley Parade, left with the club 22nd in the division after a run of five successive defeats.
Barrow, sat just one place above Bradford, later announced that they had parted company with their manager David Dunn.
RUGBY: Gloucester head coach George Skivington has defended his young players and said they will learn from their 55-10 Champions Cup hammering at the hands of Lyon yesterday.
The Cherry and Whites had nine players out injured and other key figures were absent for the trip to France. It left an inexperienced side to take to the field and the result was a record defeat — the most points a Gloucester team has conceded in the top tier of European rugby.
“We let in more tries than we wanted to, but at the end of the day we threw a lot of young lads into the deep end today and they’ll be better for it down the line,” said Skivington.
