Russian night-time strikes on Ukraine kill 15
Rescuers run to a shelter to hide from an air raid during a Russian missile and drone barrage in Kyiv, Ukraine, June 17, 2025

A NIGHT-TIME Russian missile and drone bombardment of Ukraine killed 15 people and injured 131 others as they slept in their homes, local officials said today, with most bombs falling on Kiev.

At least 14 people were killed as explosions echoed across the Ukrainian capital for almost nine hours during the night, Kiev City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said.

The bombardment demolished a nine-storey block of flats, destroying dozens of homes.

Russia fired more than 440 drones and 32 missiles at Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, calling the Kiev attack “one of the most terrifying strikes” on the capital.

Kiev mayor Vitalii Klitschko said that 114 people were injured and announced an official day of mourning in the city on Wednesday.

It was one of the deadliest attacks on Kiev in recent months and came after two rounds of direct peace talks failed to make progress on ending the war, now in its fourth year.

Mr Zelensky was set to meet US President Donald Trump in Canada today and press him for more help, but the White House announced that Mr Trump would return early to Washington on Monday night because of tensions in the Middle East.
