'Rampant profiteering' as Tesco hails its highest market share for more than a decade

TESCO was slammed for rampant profiteering after hailing its highest market share for more than a decade today.

Britain’s biggest supermarket chain bragged that it notched up a rise in festive sales despite “intense” competition.

The supermarket reported a 3.3 per cent rise in Britain and Ireland like-for-like sales over the six weeks to January 3.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “While workers and their families, including Tesco’s own workers, are still struggling with rampant food inflation, Tesco is paying out millions in shareholder dividends and their executive pay has soared.

“This sort of rampant profiteering is simply a disgrace, and it must be stopped.”

Food prices in Britain have rocketed by a staggering 40 per cent over the past four years.

Yet Tesco has seen its operating profit balloon by almost three quarters (72 per cent) between 2020/21 and 2024/5.

Tesco was approached for comment.
