Perthshire teachers facing fire and rehire vow to strike again
An EIS picket line

TEACHERS facing a fire & rehire attack on their pensions at a Perthshire private school have vowed further strike action.

Earlier this year EIS union members at Craigclowan School rejected management cost-cutting plans to remove them from the Scottish Teachers’ Pension Scheme and place them in a direct-contribution pension scheme branded inferior by the union.

Facing resistance to the change in contract, school bosses — who refuse to recognise or negotiate with trade unions — sought to impose the change via fire & rehire, prompting teachers to overwhelmingly back strike action.

After a two-day strike last week, EIS general secretary Andrea Bradley paid tribute to members’ “unity and courage.”

Area officer Dan Thompson said: “Fire & rehire is a despicable practice that has no place in Scottish education. Craigclowan teachers are being compelled to give up the pension security of the scheme and accept a far inferior alternative.

“This cuts against the values of fairness, respect and integrity that should underpin every workplace.

“The EIS stands firmly with our members and urges Craigclowan to enter negotiations without delay.”

The school was contacted for comment.
